Haircut Before Hair Transplant – Is It Always Necessary at Phaeyde Clinic?
During a hair transplant, several factors must be considered. One of the most common questions our patients ask is: is it necessary to cut the hair short before the procedure? Thanks to the advanced techniques used at the Phaeyde Clinic and our experienced doctors, we offer personalized solutions. In this article, you’ll find all the essential information about the relationship between haircuts and hair transplants.
Before a Hair Transplant – Why Might a Haircut Be Necessary?
The foundation of a hair transplant procedure is extracting healthy hairs from the donor area — that is, the back and sides of the scalp. To do this, it’s usually essential to trim this area down to 1–2 mm in length, because the ultra-fine, thin-walled needles we use in the S.H.E. hair transplant method can only be used effectively on hair of this length. Longer hair simply wouldn’t allow for proper placement, so extracting the grafts and transplanting them precisely is only possible this way.
Is Shaving the Entire Head Always Necessary?
Many patients are concerned they’ll need to shave their entire head before the procedure. However, at our clinic, complete shaving is not the goal. While short hair is always required in the donor area, it’s not necessarily needed in the recipient (target) area. For example, in women, it may be sufficient to shave just a small 8x10 cm window in the recipient zone. About 30% of the grafts are taken from this window, and the remaining 70% of the hair grows back. On the target area, such as the crown, we are able to implant hair between existing long hairs.
Haircut in the Recipient Area
The necessity of cutting hair in the recipient area depends on the number of grafts to be transplanted. If fewer than 2,500 hairs are to be implanted and the patient has at least 15 cm of hair, it is often possible to implant the new hairs between the existing long hairs. The S.H.E. method is particularly well-suited for these refined, aesthetic solutions. Due to the complexity of this procedure, we apply a 20% surcharge.
How Is the Hair Cut on the Day of the Transplant?
Patients don’t need to cut their hair in advance — our professionals will determine the optimal length on-site. This allows patients to arrive with the hairstyle they would like to maintain afterward. If you'd prefer to avoid a drastic change, we recommend trimming the hair to about 2 cm beforehand, which offers a neat and gradual transition.
How Much of the Scalp Needs to Be Shaved?
The donor area covers about 180–220 cm² on the lower back of the head, and grafts are extracted from this zone. Hair in this region is generally trimmed to 1–2 mm to enable technical precision during removal. Most men already wear their hair short in this area, so shaving does not cause a noticeable change.
If more than 1,200 grafts are being transplanted, the recipient area — for example, the crown — must also be shaved. While technically we can perform hair transplants between long hairs at our clinic, for several reasons (especially in men), we recommend shaving the entire recipient area to 1 mm. One important reason is hygiene: the doctor can thoroughly clean and disinfect the shaved skin, reducing the risk of infection. Another key factor is implantation density — the highest density can be achieved on a shaved recipient area since long hairs do not obstruct the doctor’s work.
Hair Transplant FAQ
Here are the most frequently asked questions about hair transplantation:
Do all patients need to cut their hair short for the transplant?
No, only the donor and (if necessary) the recipient areas need to be shortened.
What hair length is required for the transplant?
It depends on the individual; we assess this based on photos.
When will the results be visible?
Hair growth usually becomes noticeable after 3–4 months, with final results forming in about 6–12 months.
What happens to the transplanted hairs after the procedure?
Some of the transplanted hairs will shed, but they will regrow according to the natural hair growth cycle.
Who Is the S.H.E. Hair Transplant Recommended For?
The Phaeyde Clinic’s award-winning S.H.E. method is recommended for those who want to undergo the procedure discreetly while maintaining the length of their existing hairstyle. This method is precise, less invasive, and allows for quicker healing in both the donor and recipient areas. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, making it painless.
How to Prepare for a Hair Transplant?
Before undergoing a hair transplant, we recommend attending a consultation where we assess your hair volume, scalp condition, and the overall health of your hair and scalp. Here, you’ll get answers to all your questions regarding the pre-transplant process, including which types of shampoos are recommended afterward and how to care for the transplanted area.
